How are Naturopathic Medicine and Functional Medicine different from conventional (allopathic) medicine?
There are similarities and also differences that work together well.
Naturopathic principles guide a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) to determine the underlying cause of symptoms; to treat you as a complex and whole person; develop an educational and compassionate relationship with you, utilize the least invasive treatments possible; support the healing power of nature using natural therapies; prevent degenerative disease; and to promote wellness, balance and optimal health. The services provided by Dr. Orsi will complement the services of your Medical Doctor (MD) and other health care practitioners so that we work together as a health care team for you.
Why should I see a Naturopathic Doctor?
Natural Medicine is a great way to achieve good health by supporting your body’s natural ability to heal.
Naturopathic Medicine has much to offer people with symptoms such as, but not limited to; fatigue, pain, hormonal imbalances, depression, anxiety, headaches, frequent respiratory illness, digestive disturbances, food allergies or intolerances, elevated cholesterol and/or blood sugar, high or low blood pressure, skin rashes, muscle tension and other symptoms of chronic stress.
Naturopathic Medicine works wonderfully to maintain optimal health, to prevent degenerative disease and to promote healthy aging.
How were you trained to become and ND and LMP?
The training is quite extensive.
Naturopathic training involves 5 years of full-time medical school at the accredited Bastyr University here in the Seattle area. The coursework includes the same classes that an MD would take with regard to understanding how the body works and how disease processes work, along with training in diagnostic testing and treatments such as pharmaceutical (prescription) medications. In addition, Naturopathic medical training includes extra hours in Naturopathic Medicine philosophy, counseling, nutritional therapy, botanical medicine, homeopathy, hydrotherapy and manual medicine. It is a lifelong learning profession with ongoing continuing education.
A Naturopathic Doctor has a broad scope of practice under license in the State of Washington as a Naturopathic Physician
While Naturopathic scope includes massage, Dr. Orsi has additional training from the former Brenneke School of Massage (now Cortiva) and is licensed as a Massage Practitioner (LMP) in the State of Washington.
How do I prepare for my first visit?
There are a few steps that will help to make the process efficient.
Please call for a free 15-minute consult to review your health concerns and the process, as well as to schedule an appointment.
Before your first visit you will be asked to complete and return health information forms, complete an online symptom questionnaire, and to send copies of any lab or imaging (MRI, X-ray, US, etc.) reports that were done for you within the last 1 to 3 years. If you don’t already have copies of these test reports, you can sign a release with the practitioner who ordered them to request that copies be sent to Dr. Orsi at Westside Natural Medicine.
All of the information you send is reviewed before your first visit to improve the efficiency of your visit and help to resolve your health concerns.
The first visit is typically 1-1/2 hours to allow for time to obtain a thorough understanding of your symptom picture, health concerns and goals, and to do relevant physical exam. The information gathered also informs the need for any additional tests to understand underlying deficiencies, toxicities or imbalances.
Follow-up visits are typically 30 – 60 minutes and are scheduled based on follow-up needed for review of lab results, your treatment plan, your schedule and your health care goals.
Do you do lab testing?
Absolutely, appropriately selected testing informs the process and your treatment plan.
Both conventional and functional tests are available including comprehensive blood chemistry, male & female hormones, food allergy & sensitivity, digestive function, adrenal function, toxicity, nutrient status, nervous system function, cardiovascular function and other specialized tests. Westside Natural Medicine obtains the least expensive pricing possible by billing through doctor accounts and memberships. The patient then pays for the test once it is completed. This process allows for gathering of thorough, cost-effective information to understand underlying deficiencies, toxicities and imbalances in order to effectively guide treatment plans.
Do you take insurance?
Westside Natural Medicine can provide insurance receipts for time-of-service payments for services and labs.
Patients can submit these to their insurance for reimbursement. For many patients these expenses apply toward their deductible and they also receive reimbursement for out-of-network Naturopathic care and for the lab testing. Dr. Orsi does not bill insurance directly.
If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Account (HSA), these usually at work very well to cover expenses for Naturopathic Medicine, testing, Manual Therapies and sometimes even supplements.
The rates for services at Westside Natural Medicine are affordable. This is of value to those seeking Naturopathic and Preventative Healthcare, but who don’t have Naturopathic coverage on their insurance and especially to those who have no health insurance at all. Many believe that Natural Medicine and Preventative Care are actually the best insurance for promoting and maintaining good health.
Payment is due at the time of service for which cash, check and credit cards are accepted.
Gift Certificates are available for both Naturopathic Medicine and Manual Therapies.
